Phase Shifting 2020
These pieces were commissioned for a small apartment with white walls and lots of windows. They were a visual response to music as described below:
"Phase-shifting works by taking the input signal and adding a very small amount of delay to it, and then mixing it back with the original (non-delayed) signal so that certain frequencies of the audio are in or out of phase with each other. The time delay is modulated so the delay amount changes with time."
I always pay attention to the textures in the substrates (linen, in this case) -- my initial "input signal" -- and add some variations of marks in response. There is a quiet and repetitive quality to the paintings that feels to me a visual representation of minimalist music and perhaps this gesture of phase shifting in particular.
