Mouth Paintings 2008-2012
In this body of work, I built several tent sculptures out of paper tea boxes and used them as the subjects of my 2D work. Because I had developed tendinitis in both forearms, I was unable to hold a brush in my hands, so I learned to draw and paint by gripping it between my teeth. This was a four year process which yielded a new kind of mark-making, economical and intimate. All the paintings in Ohel are mouth paintings. While the illness that led to this temporary disability has waned significantly, the experimental mark-making process that emerged continues to inform my practice.
