About me

About me

My work subordinates the hierarchic strata for materials and processes in order to draw our attention to the invisible. Drawer liners and woven polypropylene sacks are preferred substrates over linen and pine. Wood filler yellow is sought out above Old Holland’s Naples, cement patch over Payne’s Gray. It is those most humble in origin which provide direction and dialogue for the work.

Though classically trained as a figurative oil painter, a debilitating illness prompted the use of alternative materials and mark-making tools. Strangely, these limitations greatly expanded my practice. I explore processes such as mouth painting, sewing, and extrusion painting, and all kinds of hardware store products to industrial fabrics as media. The verisimilitude of figurative painting plays out here in notions of mimicry and material rhymes of these humble materials. The work seeks to elevate and transcend them.

As an extension of my practice, I work with Turntable of San Francisco using art to bring healing to traumatized and at-risk youth. More can be found about Turntable below.
